Get The Hot Air Out Of Your Attic

The last time you were in your attic did it seem like a heater was on up there and you couldn’t wait to get out?  Lowering the temperature in your attic is the key for savings on electricity in the Summer months.  Here are some simple things you can do to save hundreds of dollars a year.

Leave your garage door lifted up no more than two to three inches.  Then open the attic access door (2 feet by 2 feet) by simply putting a pool noodle to hold it open.  This will allow air to flow under the garage door and up into the attic space, displacing the hot air with cooler outside air.

The air in the attic is between 120 degrees to over 240 degrees.  In the summertime outside air is between 80 degrees to over 100 degrees in Texas.  This transfer of air will cool the attic, which in turn will keep your AC from turning on as often and stay off longer between cycles saving you on your electric bill!

Remove any soffit venting and clean the cobwebs and debris (insulation) away from the area and then put them back in place.  The insulation should be at 6 inches above the rafters and not blocking any soffit vents.

Have an energy efficient roof installed. If you’re finding your Austin home still gets too hot throughout the summer months, there may be an insulation problem with your roof. Some energy efficient roofs include:

  • Tile roofs
  • Asphalt Shingles
  • Shake shingles
  • Slate roofing
  • Metal roofing
