Drought in Texas and what you need to know

Variables are high when we are trying to predict the probability of water in our beloved Texas, so we decided to give you a quick run down on what your chances of facing drought at the end of this summer.

In 1950, Texas experienced the most dramatic drought in history and bonus… it lasted for 7 years. Many Texas ranch families were forced to give up their field work and move into the city to find new ways of making money. The cowboys and farmers that stayed behind learned how to be resilient and work through it by getting serious about it’s water plans. Texans put in place a formal plan helped lesson the impact of subsequent droughts, called the Texas State Water Plan, which predicted usage and allocated resources appropriately.

High-and low-pressure systems, topography, and ocean-air interactions are the weather factors that cause the droughts we dread. The Trans-Pecos region is known as the driest in Texas but we can experience drought pretty much anywhere in the great state. Here are a few things you can do to fight back with conservation when you see a drought on the horizon:

• Use low-flow showerheads

• Turn that faucet off when you are washing dishes and brushing your teeth

• Collect water that is clean from rinsing off vegetables, draining pasta, or other food prep and put that water back in the garden or give it to your plants

• Always pay attention to usage restrictions for your community and follow them- let’s be considerate of one another

• Take showers with your spouse every time ( just kidding- seeing you were paying attention)
